About Snout Hive
Why this site exists
I started Snout Hive after spending too much money on dog gear that didn’t work.
A $90 “indestructible” chew toy destroyed in three days. A “no-pull” harness that my Lab Roxy slipped out of on day two. A GPS tracker that stopped reporting after a week. The reviews on Amazon said all of them were great. The reviews lied.
So I started doing what you’re probably doing right now — reading review sites trying to figure out which products are actually good. And most of those sites? They’re thin. Generic. Written by someone who’s never owned a dog. Just affiliate links wrapped in three paragraphs of fluff.
That’s not what this is.
What we do
Snout Hive is an independent dog gear review site. We test products with real dogs in real homes — not for 5-minute unboxing videos, but for at least 30 days of actual daily use. We dig into materials, vet recommendations, and customer complaints before we write a single word.
We’ve tested:
- Harnesses, collars, leashes (the ones that hold up and the ones that snap)
- Crates, carriers, playpens (including the ones our dogs escape from)
- Beds — orthopedic, cooling, chew-proof
- GPS trackers, smart collars, pet cameras
- Slow feeders, automatic feeders, water fountains
- Grooming tools, dental care, supplements
- Training gear, calming aids, anxiety wraps
If we recommend something, we’d buy it again. If we don’t, we say why.
How we make money (and how we don’t)
Snout Hive earns commission when you buy products through our affiliate links. That’s how this site stays free for you to read. We participate in Amazon Associates, Chewy Affiliates, and other programs.
Here’s what doesn’t happen:
- Brands don’t pay us to feature their products
- We don’t accept “review samples” with strings attached
- We don’t take down honest negative reviews because a brand complained
- We don’t bury bad picks behind paywalls
If a product fails, we say it failed. If a brand emails us asking for a positive review in exchange for free product, we delete the email.

Who’s behind this
Snout Hive is run by me — a long-time dog owner who’s wrangled stubborn Labs, anxious rescues, and one senior Beagle who refuses to wear coats. I’m not a vet. I’m not a certified trainer. I’m someone who’s spent years living with dogs, breaking gear, returning gear, and figuring out what actually works.
When I cite expert sources, I link to them — vet associations, breed clubs, peer-reviewed studies. When I share opinions, I tell you they’re opinions.
I’m based in Vietnam. The dogs we test with live with friends and family across different climates and homes. If that affects how we test, we tell you.
Our dogs
Every product on this site has been tested with at least one real dog. The current testing crew includes:
- Roxy — Black Lab, 65 lbs, 4 years old. The puller. The chewer. The reason most “indestructible” claims are lies.
- Max — Mixed breed, 45 lbs, 7 years old. Anxious in crates, fine in cars, terrified of grooming.
- Buddy — Senior Beagle, 22 lbs, 11 years old. Has graduated to ramps, joint supplements, and stubborn opinions.
When we test gear, we tell you which dog tested it and what we observed.
